WTO Election: Okonjo-Iweala emerges WTO New Director-General with a wide margin
Former Minister of Finance in Nigeria under Goodluck Jonathan administration Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has emerged as the new director-general of World Trade Organisation today with a landslide margin against South Korean Yoo Myung hee.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala becomes the first female to emerge as the director-general of the World Trade Organisation since its creation.
The Nigerian received huge support from Europe, Africa, and other continents. She was a former World Bank executive and also a board member of popular microblogging platform Twitter.
Her candidature was backed by the European countries while United States of America supports South Korean Yoo Myung Hee.
Okonjo-Iweala was the Minister of Finance in Nigeria when the most populous black nation on earth was rated one of the 6 fastest developing economies in the world.
