America loosed a country music icon Billy Joe Shaver whom Willie Nelson once called “the greatest living writer.”
He was reported to have died in Texas at Ascension Providence Hospital at the age of 81.
Tribute Pours in For Billy Joe Shaver
“Speaking of wild-eyed southern boys, today we also lost the inimitable Billy Joe Shaver,
“You’ve been to school, you say you are a lawyer
You walked out of a magazine
I’ve been a drifter and a low-life loser
You can learn a lot from me” A fan said.
“Billy Joe Shaver was my hero. I am heartbroken. The world will never know his likeness again. I strive to someday be the man he was. #RIP #BillyJoeShaver @normmacdonald,” A Twitter user said.
“Billy Joe Shaver & Jerry Jeff Walker both gone in less than a week is a pretty big toll on the “Outlaw Country” music front.
Neither was immensely popular, but both had huge legions of dedicated fans & were big influences on others of that genre,” A Twitter user said.
I met billy joe at mother blues when I was in my twenties and the first thing he said to me was “I just took some lsd and I need about a half inch more.” the last thing he said to me about a month ago was “I’m praying for you, ray.” adios, mi amigo. pic.twitter.com/2c3VuzLo2p

Another great Texas music icon is gone. Billy Joe Shaver was a bona fide, certified, Lone Star original – a throwback to a far different time. This was echoed in the music he wrote and performed over a long and very adventurous life. https://t.co/boaCjRLl3w

RIP Billy Joe Shaver. His poetry was sweat-slicked and sharp as the blades on a combine. A Texas legend. pic.twitter.com/Wdeite1lvr

One of the original outlaws of country music, Billy Joe Shaver recorded the Squidbillies theme for us in a church outside of Austin. He was a genius songwriter, had a great sense of humor and gave our show instant credibility. RIP Billy Joe Shaver. https://t.co/5NG92MF7S9
