Across the country, thugs are now disrupting the Endsars protest. The peaceful march by Nigeria youths across the nation has seen on Tuesday witnessed a number of disruptions by thugs but the youths are not relenting as they demand police reform and accountability.
Yesterday in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, a group of sponsored Almajiris boys tried to disrupt the peaceful protest as they invaded the venue of protest with Charms and dangerous weapons destroying properties and cars. Many of the Endsars protesters were injured.
However, things took another turn, when the protesting young Nigerians decided to defend themselves and started to chase the hired thugs. In the process, some of the thugs were captured and they revealed that they were paid a sum of 1500 ($3) to disrupt the peaceful protest by the transport union Chairman in Abuja.
A similar development was a witness in Lagos, the commercial capital of the country as hired thugs invaded the venue of the peaceful Endsars protest in Alausa Ikeja the state capital. The thugs who came in government buses were armed with charms, machete, and other dangerous weapons. Many people were injured in the mêlée that broke out. Protesters were able to hold their ground as the injured ones were rushed to the hospitals for medical attention.
In the same manner, earlier today another group of armed thugs has arrived at the venue of protesters in Alauasa Ikeja in Lagos State managed commercial transport buses (BRT) to disrupt the Endsars protest. According to information reaching us, the thugs were been hired by some element within the State and Federal government.
For a week now Nigerians, mostly youths have been protesting against police brutality that is perpetrated by the police Unit SARS. The governments in going with the demands of the Endsars protesters have disbanded the police unit and set up a new tactical unit in its place. However, Nigerians are not satisfied with this as they call on the government to carry out a total reform of the Police force which includes improving police welfare.
While the government is foot-dragging in its effort to address the demand of the people, the protest across the country is growing stronger. The question remains is this why thugs are now been used to dispel the protesters or are the government try to provoke the peaceful protest into a violent one.
