The residents of Eleko village in Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State yesterday embarked on protest, in which they were demanding an immediate closure and stop of work at Dangote Refinery at the Lekki Trade Free Zone in Ibeju-Lekki.

The Residents who took to the streets mounted roadblocks with bonfires at different locations on the road leading to some companies, including the Dangote refinery in the area. And workers of the refinery were turned back from going to work.

The protest, which started early hours on Monday morning, turned violent as the youths were said to have had a faceoff with some security officials.

Residents of the Eleko community accused the company of its failure to shut down, following the lockdown order. The angry protesters accused the refinery of fast becoming the Epicentre of the COVID-19 virus in the Ibeju-Lekki area of the state, as most cases of COVID-19 in Ibeju-Lekki are traceable to the refinery.

Although there have not been any official confirmation from the state and the federal government to the accusations by the residents of Eleko village, the Eleko Police command say men of its command yesterday dispersed a group of violent protesters at the Eleko Junction area of the community.

Extra security measures have been put in place, as there have been deployment more police and military personnel to the community.

Since the first Index case of the COVID-19  virus in Lagos the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have been leaving no stone unturned, in it’s bid to curtail the spread of the deadly virus.

Measures such as total lockdown were initiated to help flatten the curve. However, looking at the economic implications caused by the lockdown, President Muhammed buhari, yesterday announced that effective from the 4th of May, the lockdown will be relaxed to allow some businesses to open up.
