House of Representative member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency of Delta in the National Assembly, Ben Igbakpa disagreed with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo comment that government should not be the one running refineries.

“Sinopec (China), KPC (Kuwait), PDVSA (Venezuela), Pemex (Mexico), NIOC (Iran), Petronas (Malaysia), etc represent a list of state-owned oil companies operating refineries. I respect PYO but this is a wrong premise to justify the failure of government to get our refineries working” says Ben Igbakpa on his social media handle.

“If the refinery is left in the hands of the government, it will continue to experience the same problem it is experiencing now. I do not think that it is the business of the government to run the refinery. It should be the business of the private sector, which is why we are trying to focus on assisting the private sector to develop modular refineries” says Osinbajo.

Yemi Osinbajo made the comment during a virtual meeting organized for All Progressives Congress, APC bloggers, and social media influencers at the APC national secretariat, Abuja.

The statement by Prof.Osinbajo has generated different opinions since yesterday as the country still struggles to have a functional refinery in Nigeria .

Nigeria currently imports all its petroleum products with all refineries in the country not functional at the moment.

It is becoming worrisome that Nigeria, one of the largest crude oil producers in the world has no single functional refinery in its more than 50 years of crude oil production.

The only hope for Nigeria now is the Dangote oil refinery which should be ready for operation before 2023.

Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP presidential candidate in the 2019 presidential election Atiku Abubakar promised that if elected, he will privatize the refineries in the country.

The ruling party attacked the former Vice-President saying he will sell the country refineries to his friends.
