Opinion: If SARS is Banned, What Happens to Thousands of Officers Employed Under the Division?
Nigerians on social media are currently clamoring for the abolishment of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) due to extortion, extrajudicial killings, harassment, and other atrocities committed by the Police unit.
The #EndSars trend on social media is filled with horrible experiences of young Nigerians in the hands of the rogue officer in the Anti Robbery Squad.
Many Nigerians have argued that the special police unit has done more harm than good, they abandoned their primary responsibility which is to chase armed robbers, and started going after innocent citizens.
We all want the entire SARS to the complete shutdown.
However, we must ask ourselves a quick honest question, if the entire SARS is shut down, what will happen to the thousands of officers currently employed under the Police unit?
Many Nigerians have different answers to this question.
Some have suggested that the Federal Government should draft SARS officers into the Nigerian Army and send them to Borno to fight Boko Haram at least they will become useful. Those that can’t deal should resign from the Police.
Others suggested that they should be redrafted back into the regular police.
In my own opinion, the Federal Government should be careful with the SARS issue. The monsters have been created already and any attempt to ban or abolish the unit will surely have grave consequences on the society.
With the way they misused little power given to them, you don’t want to see what they can do when they have the MILITARY POWER.
If they are dismissed from the police unit, they might turn out to be armed robbers and kidnappers unleashing more havoc in the society.
I also support the #EndSars movement but the Government must be tactical and strategic in its action against the rogue officers.
What’s your take on this?
What will happen to SARS officers when the Federal Government completely shuts down the unit?
