Ondo 2020: Agboola Ajayi submits Gubernatorial ticket with PDP
The Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi who recently defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP from APC has submitted his expression of interest and gubernatorial ticket at the party headquarter, Wadata, Plaza, Abuja today.
Agboola Ajayi fell out with Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State was made public last week after he was detained at his official residence by the State Commissioner of Police in a bid to stop his defection.
The former House of Representatives member is yet to resign his position as the Deputy Governor of the state despite defecting to PDP.
Agboola Ajayi’s show of interest to contest against Akeredolu is one political permutation most do not see coming.
Ajayi was a former chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government of Ondo State.
He also served as Chairman House Committee on Nifer Delta Development Commission during his time in the house.
If the former parliamentarian is able to win the PDP primary, he will likely go head-to-head with the incumbent Governor who is also Ajayi’s cousin.
Akeredolu will have to battle with Olusola Oke and other leading candidates to secure the APC ticket.
The Governor is unpopular among some sections of the APC faithful in Ondo State.
Recently, The Ondo State traditional council of Obas led by Olugbo of Ugbo Land, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan back Akeredolu for re-election.
The Monarchs constitute a committee in the three senatorial districts to work for the realisation of Akeredolu’s ambition.
The forthcoming election in Ondo and Edo State is between the two major political parties.
Osagie Ize-Iyamu will contest under the APC against Godwin Obaseki of PDP.
Obaseki recently defected to PDP from APC after falling out with Adams Oshiomole.
