OBA OF LAGOS And The Oba Staff Of Office Palaver: OPINION
We will all remember vividly that the consequences that went with the ENDSARS saga were of no little effects in Nigeria as the nation was almost thrown into disarray following the action of (should I say youths, hoodlums or Nigerians. Pick your choice) who took to the streets and protested, made away, vandalized and desecrated places across the nation.
A notable event in this period was the storming, looting, vandalization, and desecration of the palace of the Oba of Lagos, where the sacred Oba staff of office was openly taken away and paraded in the street of Lagos. This action prompted various reactions all, over the world. While some saw the taking away of the sacred staff as a nemesis for the misdeeds of the Oba of Lagos, many others saw the action as a desecration of a sacred altar and hence an open insult to the throne and tradition of the Yoruba’s
In the event, the Oba of Lagos was forcefully sacked from his home by the ravaging youths, and the Oba since then took refuge and hospitality elsewhere. After 10 weeks of the national Endsars protest and the desecration of the Oba’s palace. The Oba has formally returned to his palace, on Friday the 1 of January 2021. On the premise that the Oba staff of office had been found and returned to its rightful place which is the palace.
On the contrary; A Prince of Lagos, Abisoye Oshodi, based in London, has claimed that he has in his possession the authentic staff of the office of Oba of Lagos, which was stolen during the ransacking of the palace by hoodlums in late October. Abisoye in a viral video on Facebook on Saturday posted by Yoruba-Brazilian Descendants Renascimento Association said the staff of office brought to the palace on 1 January by Oba Akiolu was fake.
He, therefore, slammed the king for being an impostor. He claimed Lagos no longer has a king and Akiolu no longer has a right to the Lagos stool. Abisoye appeared to be in touch with the people who took the original staff, who, he claimed, sent it to him.
In the video, he shows the staff and declared that ‘this is the real one’. He said Oba Akiolu should vacate office, on account of this. He called the Oba a self-centered king who does not have the interest of Lagos and is hobnobbing with others, who also do not have the interest of the people.
The said video however has generated heated controversy; with many commenters’ saying Akiolu should inform Interpol of the theft and get Abisoye arrested. But Abisoye also appeared to enjoy the support of a lot of people who reacted to the post
This brings us to a situation of two Oba staff of the office of the royal ancestral palace of Lagos, one in the Lagos palace and the other in London. My position and take on this matter which I think calls for discussing are:
On the one hand; Did Oba Akiolu return with a fake Oba Staff of office to the Lagos Royal ancestry palace?
If so, what should be the consequences for such action, as in my thoughts, is a total desecration of the royal ancestry palace, a behavior worse than the hoodlums that attacked the palace in the first place. Also, total open deceit to the Lagosians and entire Yoruba race
On the other hand, If the London based prince Abisoye Oshodi claims to have the original Oba staff of office, which he claimed the hoodlums sent to him, then these are my positions. Is Prince Abisoye Oshodi telling the world the truth of having in his possession the original Oba of Lagos staff of office?
Is there a possibility that he is also having a fake staff with him? That will amount to the deceit of the total Yoruba race by the prince, hence a tenable treasonable offense of attempt to covet the exalted seat of the king. But if otherwise
How did prince oshodi get in contact with the hoodlums, as the hoodlums were a group of vandalizes with no reputation? Is the prince supposed to hide the staff of office when it was eventually sent to him by the hoodlums? Was the prince Abisoye Oshodi secretly responsible for the attack vandalization and desecration of the royal palace for self ambition to covet the throne?
How will the Yoruba race and the Lagos Kingmakers reconcile the dilemma of two royal Oba of Lagos staff of office? Whoever holds the original staff of the office is the commander of the Lagos traditional stool. Then is the Oba of Lagos in Lagos or London?
These are the many unanswered questions that have formed a clung around the Oba of Lagos and the Oba Staff of Office palaver.
