I would love to define democracy so we may all understand what is being talked about. With no needed explanations, democracy is a government of a people, for the people and by the people. This suggests that a democratic nation is ruled by the people and the elected leaders are in servitude to the people.

Nigeria gained its independence on the 1st of October, 1960, an action which is being condemned by several Nigerians due to the present state of the country. Some people suggest that Nigeria has not made any progress since the British left the shores of Nigeria. From the civil war to coup d’états to the present protests.

Apart from the issue of slavery, which was abolished on a later note, the British had a hand in the early building of Nigeria. They introduced schools, churches and hospitals. They abolished evil cultural practices such as the killing of twins. People consider the idea of the absence of independence, saying, Nigeria would have been a developed country and the Giant of Africa would be seen it all its beauty.

Back to the reality of the present situation of Nigeria, it would be agreed that when resourcefulness is not put to good use, it would only lead to stagnation. Resource wise, Nigeria is one of the richest countries in the world, but, unfortunately, there is poverty and suffering hovering around its citizens.

Instead of the leaders to make proper use of the resources and stop embezzling them, they persuade the feeble Nigerians to hustle harder and pray to God/ Allah even when the supernatural being has already provided.

Nigeria boasts of 60 years of independence with nothing to show for it. There is nothing worse than being treated as a slave in your own land.
