Lawyer, Human Rights activist, and social critic Von Bismack says the Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami’s bid to amend the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, rules of professional conduct is tantamount to promotion of illegality within the legal profession.

Von Bismack made the statement while reacting to the news making the news on social media that Malami has concluded plans to amend the legal body’s rule of professional conduct.

“The A.G federation in connivance with some Illegal practitioners tried to amend the Legal practitioner’s RPC to remove the need for stamp and seal and pave the way for the emergence of another bar.

This is more tasteless if you factor in that our A.G who is supposed to be the Fountain of legality in Nigeria, procured the amendment of the said rule illegally via excluding the mandatory provisions and procedures for the amendment of the rules” according to barrister Von.

Trouble started within the NBA when Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai was deplatform from speaking at the last NBA annual conference held last month due to waves of withdrawals from lawyers and members of the NBA to protest his invitation.

The Nigeria Bar Association later rescind their decision to invite El-Rufai and that decision has led to the formation of a splinter NBA by some aggrieved lawyers under the aegis of the New Nigerian Bar Association.

” I have seen and read Statutory Instrument No 15 of 2020 making the rounds on social media and which purports to amend the RPC. I am engaging with the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation on this issue and will provide further updates on our next steps in the coming days.

In the meantime, our position is that the RPC has not been amended as no authority was given for its amendment. I therefore enjoin all legal practitioners to remain calm and continue to conduct their affairs in the same manner as they did prior to the issuance of the Instrument” says the NBA President.
