Labour Minister Dr. Chris Ngige has send a strong threat message to striking doctors across the country.

The Minister of Labour who was live on Channels Television programme Politics Today on Friday spoke about the breach of labour law by the striking doctors. Dr. Chris Ngige said If doctors remain stubborn, I’ll invoke weapons in labor laws on them.

“By Tuesday, I will invite them back. If they become recalcitrant, there are other things I can do. There are weapons in the Labour Laws, I will invoke them. There is no work, no pay,” Dr. Chris Ngige said.

The Minister said their employers have a role to keep their business afloat, to keep patients alive. They can employ local doctors. We won’t get there but if we are going to get there, we will use that stick.”

On Thursday, the Nigeria National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) embarked on an indefinite strike in protest of the failure of the Federal Government to meet and fulfill its obligations to them.

According to representatives of the Doctors’ body, the government has failed to address lingering issues on salaries and arrears. Doctors across the country have January issued an Ultimatum following pending matters.

Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) met with the Federal Government’s team headed by Minister of Labour Dr. Chris Ngige on Wednesday over their grievances and rejected the proposals put forward by the FG on how to make up for the shortcomings in the implementation of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between both parties.

Minister of state for health Olorunnimbe Mamora who was part of the Federal Government team appealed to the doctors to be patient with the government while it works to meet their demands.
