Is The Tender Bar Based On A True Story?  

The answer is yes, the story of the film is based on a true story. The script of the film is based on the best-selling 2005 memoir of the same name written by J.R. Moehringer, which tells the true story of the childhood Moehringer rising up in Long Island, New York in the 1970s and 80s. In his book, Moehringer remembers his childhood years through his early 20s, much of which he was spent at a local bar named Dickens (later known by the name Publicans).

The memoir of Moehringer covers a broad array of his life and the characters depicted in the book as well as in the film. Several of whom were regular customers at the bar and the movie adaptation from Clooney and screenwriter William Monahan gives a particular aim to Moehringer’s Uncle Charle who was the bartender.

Moehringer is a journalist and novelist and he worked as an executive producer on the movie. He was born in the year 1964 and raised by a single mother (role played by Lily Rabe in the film) in Manhasset, New York until he moved with his mother to Scottsdale, Arizona. His father played in the movie by Max Martini, was a radio DJ who left his life at an early age. Moehringer primarily knew his father as a voice on the radio.

As viewed in the film, the real Moehringer was viewed to fill that father figure role in his life at the bar of his Uncle Charlie. In the year 2012 interview with NPR, Moehringer stated “pretty early on, my mother kind of handed me off to my uncle and these guys from the bar, asked them to, you know, take me to the beach and the ballgame.”
