From what we gathered, a circular was issued yesterday to all INEC offices nationwide to switch off electrical appliances in the offices during this lock down period to avoid any fire incidents. While a team was doing that this morning they Noticed smoke coming out from one of the offices.
Luckily, INEC is one of those government offices that has a fire service department in-house with all the equipment to fight fire outbreaks. In fact, the previous day, they had helped to combat the fire outbreak at the CAC.
So,they quickly mobilized and put out the fire before any major harm can be done. The fire was limited to one office, detached from the main building close to the media centre. The media centre was not affected at all.
It affected the office of the Director Election and Party Monitoring only. It’s detached from the main building. The Police, DSS and Fire Service are all there right now. Nothing sensitive was destroyed. The fire was caused by power surge as we gathered from informed responders.
We also gathered that substantial part of the office was unaffected. Party primaries and conventions reports are intact. The campaign finance data base is also not affected. Everything is limited to the Director’s office.
More Information will be released as the events unfold.
