INEC gets a new chairman as Mahmoud Yakubu awaits senate confirmation of his re-appointment
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC gets a new chairman today pending the confirmation of Prof.Mahmoud Yakubu by the Senate following his re-appointment for another five years by President Muhammadu buhari.
Following the expiration of Prof.Mahmoud as the commission chairman, he handed over the affairs of the commission to Air Vice-Marshal Ahmed Mua’zu (Retired) today at the commission’s headquarter in Abuja to lead the electoral body until Mahmoud Yakubu Senate confirmation.
Mahmoud Yakubu, who was appointed in 2015 ended his tenure last month but President buhari re-appointed him to lead the commission for another five years.
Prof.Mahmoud is the first Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC chairman to be re-appointed for a second time by any President.
The Independent National Electoral Commission under Mahmoud Yakubu has seen the electoral body improved after its early failure under his administration with numbers of inconclusive elections.
INEC under it yet to be confirmed, chairman begins the electoral transmission of votes from the polling unit during the September governorship election in Edo State and the commission is set to improve on the result.
Meanwhile, INEC has announced that permanent voters registration will commence in January ahead of the 2023 general election as Nigerians call on the commission open its portal to start registration of the PVC earlier than before.
