Mohammed Ahmed Barde, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, has ordered a discreet inquiry into the Sunday night deaths of seven people at Orogwe in Owerri West Local Council by suspected hoodlums.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Command’s spokesperson, Michael Abattam, stated that “the Command would go all out to ensure that the perpetrators of this despicable act are arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.”
He urged civilians to remain calm and provide credible information to the police and other security authorities in order to improve their operations and service delivery.
On August 1, at about 2200hrs, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ogbaku Divisional Police Headquarters in Owerri received a distress call that armed bandits suspected to be members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate Eastern Security Network (ESN) came in a black Lexus Jeep and three motorcycles carrying two people each, shooting sporadically at occupants in a building at Orogwe, Owerri West Local Council, which belonged to one Sir Chima Ogbuehi of Lagos, and several tenants were said to have been killed.
“The Divisional Police Officer, quickly mobilised his men with the support of a detachment of the Command’s Tactical Teams to the scene, on arrival the hoodlums had escaped almost immediately, snatching a blue-colored Toyota Sienna Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), and the Command’s tactical team quickly went on their trail, while the DPO and his men rushed the injured to Federal Medical Centre, Owerri and evacuated the corpses to the mortuary.
“Unfortunately, seven people were killed in the incident, while six others were injured and transported to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri, Imo State.”
In another development, operatives of the Command stated that they killed one Osita Ogbuiri, a notorious criminal, who spared the lives of eight people in the state’s Ohaji-Egbema Local Council, including a police inspector (name withheld) and Charles Mgbarahu, Town Union President of Mmahu Community, on July 21 and July 9, 2022, respectively.
According to the report, the deceased criminal was a member of the feared cult group “De-Gbam,” which had been implicated in multiple violent attacks on private and public buildings, as well as the murder of security personnel and innocent bystanders.
On April 5, 2021, he was claimed to be among the convicts that escaped from the Imo State Correctional Centre in Owerri, where he was serving life in prison for the murder of two people.
