Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state has presented gold specimens and other minerals found in the state to President Muhammed buhari at the villa yesterday.
The Zamfara state governor Bello Matawalle posted about it in his tweeted page said earlier today. The governor call on the Federal Government to be proactive in the mining of precious minerals in the state.
I presented specimens of gold and other precious minerals unearthed from solid mineral deposits in Zamfara State to the President & C-in-C of Armed Forces H.E. @Mbuhari at Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to the governor, Zamfara State is been blessed with solid minerals deposits, and he claims that the state possessed 60 out of the total country’s solid minerals deposits of the country and if we’ll harness can add more to the nation’s economy and eventually reduce the total dependence on oil.
He said more than 70% of precious mining activities in Nigeria are done by illegal miners especially form the Asian countries in connived with local community members.
Governor Bello Matawalle also stated that illegal mining activities had been at the root of community violence, insecurity, health, and environmental challenges in the state.
“The first is that it destroys farmland and distorts the livelihood of agrarian communities. The trenches dug for these mining activities are abandoned after the mining is over. They, therefore, become death traps and easy entry points for devastating gully erosions was in the case of the communities in Zamfara State, many of these mines are contaminated with impurities.
In this case, gold ash was intermingled with deposits of lead. In a few cases, some of the impurities are even radioactive in nature. Ignorant community members, therefore, go to these mines and come in contact with contaminants”
Governor Bello Matawalle called on the Federal Government to be proactive to avoid the health, environment, and security challenge that is prevailing in the Niger Delta area of the country as a result of Oil presence.
Governor Bello Matawalle, has used this opportunity to advise the federal government on the necessary steps need to take to help check the growing spites of insecurity in the northwest.
