Gangan is a community in the Ibarapa region of Oke-Ogun in Oyo state. The people living in this Yoruba community are predominant farmers. If one gets to this town, one will know that there are several other Nigerians of different tribes living in Gangan in peace and harmony. Such tribes are Igbos, Hausas, Fulani, Tivs, Edos, and many other tribes. In short, Gangan is a Yorubaland that accommodates several tribes, and since it is not a crime to accommodate our brothers who are fellow Nigerians, things remain as they are supposed to be for these Yoruba people until things suddenly change.
What happened afterward can not be attributed to a certain period, but it all happened that the Nigerians are facing threats of insecurity, and the threats extended to Gangan, the Oyo state community.
It later resulted in several stories of abductions, rape, arson, and killings.
These people who are predominant farmers now become afraid of farming because some marauders are in the bush and ready to attack anyone on their farms, even though if one succeeds in getting to the farm, one’s crops are already ravaged by these marauders who may bring their cattle to graze on one’s farm.
As a result, the indigenes traced all of these complications to a specific Fulani leader who was living comfortably on their land, and he was given a few days to vacate the land, which later led to hostility between the Yorubas indigenes of Gangan and the Fulani who had been living comfortably on the land for many years. Furthermore, because no one has ever been excommunicated in Gangan’s history,
His properties were squandered, some of his children were killed while others were displaced.
The Seriki himself was later banished from the land and he went directly to Ilorin, the land where he was born.
Could the recent attack on the Gangan community be a retaliatory attack or a coincidence?
There has been a rumor that Fulani marauders wielding sophisticated weapons have been spotted in the Gangan forest since the Seriki was varnished.
Remember that another heinous man, Wakili, who defends the Fulani in Gangan, was apprehended and imprisoned, and that the heinous trade in abductions linked to this marauder was also thwarted. Thus, on whose side will the marauders that were seen in the forest be?
What later happened on the 5th of June, 2021 in this Yoruba community needs thorough circumspect and that is what the state government is working on presently.
On the specified date, a group of about fifty marauders invaded the community, killing people and destroying properties. If we recall what happened to the Seriki in the past, his palace was burned and his vehicle was also razed; this is the same thing that the marauders did in the community because they also destroyed the palace of the King of Gangan and many other properties.
In the long run, the youths of the Yoruba land claimed that they killed four of the marauders, according to the BBC Yoruba news here.
Now, who is behind this massacre? When BBC Yoruba contacted Seriki, he disclaimed the allegations. While Wakili is still in prison, can we now say it is the marauders whose nasty trade of abduction has been foiled that are behind this?
The Mistakes Gangan Youths Made
When the Gangan youths stated that they killed four of their enemies who attacked them on Saturday, many Yorubas and Nigerians in general were dissatisfied because they should have caught two or three alive amidst the people and that could have given the Nigeria’s police more opportunities to trace the marauders to know why the evil was done.
Lesson People Of Gangan Should Learn From What Happened Recently
The people of Gangan should know that they should not sleep with their two eyes open because it is noteworthy that the marauders are not done with them, especially as the youths still kill about four of them.
They should now set up a vigilante group that will start working with Nigeria’s forces and also be ready to give information to Nigeria’s forces on time to safeguard the land.
For the time being, the people of the land should not name anyone as a prime suspect because none of the marauders has been apprehended alive, and their claims that the marauders are communicating in Fulani are not proof that the attackers are Fulani; they could be from another country.
