On 2nd of June 2021, Tweet deleted President Muhammad buhari’s tweet where he made reference to the civil-war and threatened to deal with the promoters of insurrection in the South East region. The tweet was deleted after it was reported by thousand of Nigerians. Twitter also confirmed that the tweet violated the platform rules and regulations.
In reaction to Twitter’s action, the Federal Government suspended the operations of the platform in Nigeria indefinitely. The Minister for Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said Twitter’s activity in Nigeria is suspicious and against the country’s corporate existence.
The government’s decision has generated different reactions on social media as many Nigerians kicked against the suspension of the platform. Nigeria is not the first country to suspend Twitter’s operation. China, Iran and North Korea have also banned the platform.
Also, President Muhammad buhari is not the first world leader whose tweet was deleted from the app, three other president have also experienced the same. They include;
1. Former US President, Donald Trump.
Before his account was finally deleted in January 2021, Twitter deleted and fact-checked Trump’s tweets several times for spreading fake news and misinformation. Trump reiterated the false claim that the election he lost was stolen and encouraged his supporters to remember that day going forward. His account was deleted after his supporters evaded the US Capitol Hill in January 2021.
2. President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil.
Bolsonaro tweets were deleted after claiming he used Chloroquine to treat COVID-19 in March 2020.
3. President Nicola Maduro of Venezuela.
Maduro tweets were deleted after he recommended natural brew as treatment for coronavirus.
4. Iran Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Khamenei tweets were deleted after claiming COVID-19 vaccines developed by the US and the UK can’t be completely trusted. He accused the western powers of trying to contaminate the world with the vaccines.
