Thugs have become the latest means employed by the machinery of government to dispel peaceful protesters. This has shown that governments at all levels are failing to guarantee the free expression of fundamental human rights of Nigerians.
Across the country, there are reports that some close elements in government payroll have started to employ and mobilize thugs, miscreants, and hooligans to disrupt peaceful protests organized by Nigerians for a better nation. In Abuja, the Federal Capital territory, apprehended thugs, and miscreants have revealed how they were paid 1500 (less than $5) to disrupt Endsars peaceful protest while the police did nothing.
There have been reports across the country showing hired thugs and miscreants attacking peaceful protesters. Earlier today in Alausa Ikeja, thugs came in their hundreds in government commercial transport buses. The thugs were seen brandishing charms, machete, and other dangerous weapons as they attack unarmed peaceful protesters.
It seems that the government is employing a non-state element to dispel the long week protest against police reform. The government is trying as much as it can to end the protest without bringing the attention of the international community to its doorstep as there are already reports of police and military attacks on peaceful protesters which have already led to the death of more than 10 persons.
Nigerians are demanding for reform within the Police force, The Federal Government is already attending to the demand of the protesters with the immediate disbandment of SARS and redeployment of men under the unit to other units and police formation in the country.
The Inspector-General of Police has also stated that the era of police profiling and searching through citizens’ phones without a warrant is over. He also said all members of the defunct police SARS unit would go through a psychological assessment.
However, Nigerians are still demanding that families of protesters who have died during the ongoing one-week long protest are compensated, Police welfare improved and all police officers involved in the death of innocent Nigerians arrested and trial.
In what seems like time is running out on the government side, the protest is already affecting the economy and other social activities, the government at all level are looking for ways to end the protest. There are indications that the government is employing non-state elements such as the hiring of thugs and miscreants to help dispel the protesters.
