His arrival follows the departure of Chris Silverwood, who served as England’s all-format coach before being fired in February. After a succession of disappointments, McCullum revitalised New Zealand’s Test cricket scene. He cleared the path for a new type of cricket in the longest format, and his coaching philosophy might assist England in the same way that it benefitted Kane Williamson and the company during the WTC 2019-21 cycle.

McCullum said upon his appointment.”I’d want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to positively contribute to England’s Test cricket set-up and help the squad move ahead into a more prosperous age.”

“By accepting this post, I am well aware of the huge problems the team is now facing, and I firmly believe in my ability to help the team emerge as a stronger force once we’ve tackled them head-on,”

McCullum’s first priority as England Test coach will be to improve England’s place in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 table. England is now at the bottom of the table following a streak of dismal results.

McCullum has coaching expertise in franchise cricket and is now the head coach of the IPL’s Kolkata Knight Riders. McCullum was also the head coach of the Caribbean Premier League’s Trinbago Knight Riders.

McCullum praised England’s new Test captain Ben Stokes and expressed his excitement about working with him. “Ben Stokes has the ideal character to drive reform around him, and I look forward to collaborating with him to establish a successful unit around us,” he said.

Kevin Pietersen also commented that Brendon McCullum’s selection as England’s Test match coach is intriguing. He believes his style of cricket will be similar to what Rob Key and Ben Stokes desire.  Something has to change, and this is a good thing, he added.

He views that England will now be disciplined, but will also be encouraged to play spontaneously. After his tenure as captain of New Zealand, he has only known positive and success as a leader of a Test squad.

Kevin further explains that Harry Brook’s inclusion in the Test team follows his template. He says, “When I saw Brook play in The Hundred last summer, I felt he should be in the Test team. He is a natural talent who needs to be supported.”

In response to McCullum’s hiring, Rob Key commented, “We are thrilled to have Brendon confirmed as England Men’s Test Head Coach. It has been an honour to get to know him and learn his perspectives on the game. “I feel his selection will benefit England’s Test team.” “He has a recent track record of improving cricket culture and conditions, and I believe he is the right guy to do so for England’s red-ball cricket.

Vaughan called McCullum’s nomination a “huge risk,” writing in his Telegraph column that while the New Zealander is “the right mentor, thinker, and cultural promoter,” his lack of experience might be a hindrance.

“He won’t have to do much for us to see a significant improvement, but if it doesn’t happen soon, questions will be raised about his hiring and whether England would have been better off with a safer set of hands, more experienced, and who knows how to coach in Test cricket.” But one thing is certain: we’re headed for a wild trip,” Vaughan said.

England has a busy summer of Test cricket ahead of them, with a home series against McCullum’s native New Zealand, the finale of a five-match Test series against India, and a three-match series against South Africa.
