Don’t be deceived by my headline. The Nigeria you see today, you shall no longer see tomorrow. This is because of the end SARS physical and virtual protest as shown to what extent youth are recognised. It also proved to the world that unity alone can set us free. Permit me to give you a brief detail about the #endSARS protest which is currently going on in Nigeria and some major cities around the world like Dublin, London etc. You can also read my article on this platform titled Cybercrime: why should every youth be turned to prey? I wrote it around January even before #endSARS became a big deal.
The special anti-robbery squad (SARS) is a tactical unit of Nigerian Police Force (NPF). I am confident that their primary objective could easily be depicted from the name of the squad. However, SARS deviated from their primary purpose. Armed robbers are now out there walking freely on the street. This is basically because they left their initial job, switched from capturing armed robbers to arresting youth who are into cybercrime.
Instead of them to prosecute them according to the law they will drag them to ATM stands and force them to withdraw a huge amount of money for them. However, things have taken turns recently, aside from extorting youth who fills their prey, a good number of lives have been cut short by these people. The irony is that those who are meant to protect us are the ones killing us. My country is full of a lot of ironies. It’s only in my country a Governor who is also a lawyer would release a statement restricting citizens from protesting in his state, those who defy the law are those who know the law.
What made this protest to be well recognized is the support of many Nigerian celebrities. Singers like Olamide, Davido, Falz, Small doctor and many others joined the protest both virtually and physically. Some even led physical protest. Skit makers like Mr Macaroni, Nasty Black, Broda Shaggi and the likes led some physical protest too.
Afeez Fashola who is popularly known as Nairamarley cancelled his protest. However, the youths carried on, their voices needed to be heard with or without the support of any celeb. This shows to what extent Nigerian youths are independent and craving for justice. Some even claimed he was scared as he started something he couldn’t finish.
Aisha Yesufu, a human activist and I call her a warrior. She is the Queen Amina of our time. She is one of the leading voices behind the endSARS protest. She was also the co-convener if the bring back our girls movement, a group that advocated for the abduction of 200 Chibok girls on 14th of April, 2014.
Now let’s talk about the real voices behind the protest. The real voices are those of the youths who stood their ground and refused to be intimidated. Some left their work, job, business and even academics to seek reform of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF). and Nigeria as a whole.
Some even took it beyond physical and went spiritual. There have been prayer walks in several states across the country where youths prayed to God and interceded for our ailing nation. Thru couldn’t stop speaking in tongues as they were filled with the zeal, passion to save our Nation. All major forms of religions were represented as some native doctors even came out.
The Federal Government heeded and the Inspector General of Police dissolved SARS. However, Nigerians continued to protest and requested the President addresses us on the matter, he bowed to pressure and addressed us! This alone has proved that together we can achieve anything.
Some other hashtags like #endnothernbanditory, #endasuustrike,#endbadgovernanceinNigeria began to trend. If Nigerian Youths continue like this, absolutely the corrupt Nigeria we see today, we shall no longer see tomorrow. Our country clocked 60 a few weeks ago and we had nothing to show for it. A man aged 60 would have achieved one thing or the other. The question ringing in our ears is if the labours of our heroes haven’t been in vain.
Nigerians are out there speaking peace to the country, protesting for the betterment of the country. The agitation this Time is very strong as some protesters returned to where they were protesting despite being attacked by thugs earlier. Everyone has been contributing their little quota. As a content Creator, here is my little quota.
You too reading this should contribute your quota. If you are a content Creator like I am, develop more Contents. If you are a skit maker, make more skits that ridicule and will reform the country. If you are a poet, imbibe these in your poems. Artistes out there should develop satires to criticize the country. It is not about those who promised to be of support, it’s about those who contributed their little quota! What will you tell your children in years to come?
