Edo 2020: USA Issues New Statement About Edo Governorship Election.
The United States of America’s mission in Nigeria has reacted to the just concluded Edo State Governorship Election.
The foreign mission congratulated the Independent National Electoral Commission and the security agencies for the successful conduct of the election.
It also commended the good people of Edo State for exercising their franchise in the election.
It also recognized Governor Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu for encouraging peace to reign in the Edo State.
Civil societies and non-governmental organizations were also commended.
This was revealed to the public in a statement released on the mission official Twitter handle on Wednesday morning, the statement read “Congratulations @inecnigeria and Nigerian security services on the Edo governorship election. We commend the people of Edo State for exercising their franchise and recognize @GovernorObaseki & @PastorIzeIyamu for encouraging peace.”
“Thanks to civil society partners @YIAGA and @SituationRoomNg @cleenfoundation @KDI_ng for their invaluable work. #EdoDecides2020”
Prior to the election date, the United States sounded a warning to politicians who were planning to rig the election, they threatened with visa ban and sanction.
The mission had earlier placed a visa ban on some politicians who were involved in Bayelsa and Kogi States election violence.
Nigerians have commended the foreign mission for sounding warning to politicians before the election. They argued that the warning helped to curb violence and malpractice. Some others argued that US actions violate the principle of noninterference enriched in the United Nations charter.
What’s your take on this?
Is it right for the US to intervene in Nigeria’s election?
Does the warning help to curb violence and malpractice?
