8-Years-old Chioma Ogbu is currently receiving treatment after neighbors rescued her from the harsh treatment been melted out to her by her uncle and his wife who she currently lives within Onitsha, Anambra State.

This innocent girl was found late in the night on the street at 3-3 Onitsha fetching water with bruises and swollen faces. The neighbors became curious and to satisfy their curiosity, they called her to know what happened.

Seeing the injuries inflicted on the body of Chioma, the neighbors have no choice but to report the matter to the nearby police station.

The uncle, Mr. Hillary Apeh who she stays with was summoned to know exactly what she did that led to the beating. He told the police that he came back from the market and there was no water at home for him to take his bath.

According to neighbors reports Mr. Hillary’s first daughter is older than Chioma, yet he did not vent his anger on his own daughter for not fetching water. His wife was also invited and questioned.

Chioma Ogbu also narrated to the police how her uncle and his wife have been maltreating her. She stays at home while her uncle’s children go to school. She sleeps in the kitchen while her uncle’s children sleep on the bed.

His wife Nkiru who she calls Aunty starves her over a minor provocation, times going a whole day, hungry.

Chioma said she never wanted to be a house help but her uncle promised her poor mother who is his sister that he will send her to school, a promise he never fulfilled.

Mr. Hillary and his wife are currently still police custody for questioning.

The harsh economic situation across the country has forced many parents to give out their children to people to work as househelps.

Chioma’s case is just one of many similar cases across Nigeria, where children are Force into labour.
