A cartoon showing how Lagos bus drivers are being exploited by state and non-state actors has generated a lot of reactions on social media. Lagos drivers pay Police, LASTMA, Area Boys, and others on daily basis.
This illegal money has been institutionalized in Lagos State Transport System and the Government is not talking about it. Most of the drivers are frustrated, but they cannot challenge the system.
The illegal activities of the security agents and area boys popularly called ‘Agbero’ are the major reasons for traffic on Lagos roads and expensive T-fare. How can we put an end to this institutionalized exploitation in Lagos State?
The cartoon has generated different reactions among Nigerians on social media, see some of the countries below.
Jadesola said: “Was rushing for an appointment when the 3rd mainland bridge was still blocked last year, my driver had to pass apongbon, there was mad traffic there again and he decided to reverse, 2 agberos rushed towards us and requested for owo reverse.. I was speechless”
Olawale said: “These area boys have become so emboldened. I can’t imagine how terrible it will be in the next 5 years.
You’ll be paying agberos for breathing.”
Ayinde said: “And the annoying part is how they also use this extortion to cause traffic just for them to collect their useless money.”
Lollipop said: “At Lagos island, if you buy goods and put them in a private car or cab, these touts will ask for ‘owo eru”, it’s annoying😑”
