buhari’s Aide, Bashir, and Vanguard Newspaper in Verbal War on Twitter Over Gana’s Death.
Special Assistant to President Muhammad buhari on New Media, Mallam Bashir Ahmad, and the Vanguard Newspaper traded words on social media over the death of Benue warlord popularly known as Gana.
Gana was killed by the Nigerian Army a few days ago, it was gathered that Gana has already surrendered to the authority and on his way to Benue State Government House for an amnesty program before he was executed by the military.
The military claimed Gana and his gang engaged them in a gun battle that led to his death.
The issue has generated different controversies in the country in the last four days.
The Vanguard Newspaper on Saturday morning published a report on Gana’s last speech to his gang members.
The headline of the publication read: Gana’s last words to his gang: “If amnesty is a ploy to kill me, stay in the forest and avenge my death”
In reaction to the headline, President buhari’s aide, Bashir, said the foremost Nigerian newspaper is pushing a dangerous narrative that could undermine the security situation of the country. The gang members could be motivated by the publication and begin to unleash terror on innocent Nigerians.
The graduate of Mass Communication said Vanguard’s publication is unethical and unpatriotic.
In response to Bashir’s statement, the Vanguard Newspaper twitter handle said “Our motto: …towards a better life for the people”
Nigerians have reacted differently to the development. Some blamed the newspaper for such sensitive information and urged them to bring it down. Others believed that there is nothing wrong with the story and that Bashir is only trying to protect the image of the Government.
What is your take on this?
Is it right or wrong for Vanguard to publish such a story?
