Cricket has experienced its fair share of scandals, just like any other sport. Here are 5 of them that have proven to quote that will never fade and cannot be removed.
1. Hansie Cronje and Mohammad Azharuddin match-fixing scandal.
Hansie Cronje was accused of manipulating the match between his team and India by the Indian police in Delhi in the year 2000. Cronje initially denied the same thing but then admitted it. Additionally, many South African players attested to the fact that Cronje had contacted them about this. Cronje said that Azharuddin was involved in the entire match-fixing scandal and that he had introduced him to the bookmakers. After the Indian was found guilty, both of them received lifetime bans from playing cricket.
2. Sandpaper Gate Scandal
In order to make the ball swing in flight, Cameron Bancroft was caught in 2018 rubbing one side of the ball on sandpaper. He was doing it in full view, and the cameras quickly recorded the entire thing. As soon as the news spread around the globe, vice-captain David Warner and captain Steve Smith both disappeared from view. They were all kicked from the team, and the coach, Darren Lehmann, quit. In 2019, the players were reintegrated into the team.
3. The clash between Glenn McGrath and Ramnaresh Sarwan.
This argument may be the foulest that has ever taken place on the cricket field. Without going into too much detail, McGrath said something to Sarwan that was quite disrespectful, and the latter, in turn, made an unwarranted and much more nasty remark about the Australian’s wife. Although they eventually expressed regret, this is one instance that will never be forgotten or dismissed as “banter.” They went too far with that.
4. The Eden Garden incident, World Cup, 1996
In this case, it was the spectators that damaged the game’s reputation. India wasn’t playing well in the semifinal match against eventual winners Sri Lanka. At this point, the game had to be abandoned because some of the stadium’s spectators started setting it on fire. Sri Lanka won the final with an outstanding effort after winning the semifinal by default. It’s safe to say that both sides, who were attempting to play to the best of their abilities, felt that this was unfair to them. The images of Vinod Kambli sobbing as he approached the stands have been extensively shared up to this point.
5. Monkey gate scandal
The Border-Gavaskar trophy’s second Test match in 2007–2008 drew criticism for claims of racism towards Indian bowler Harbhajan Singh. The Indian bowler allegedly made racist comments about Andrew Symonds, according to Ricky Ponting. However, things continued after that. Along with these problems, there were numerous serious umpiring mistakes (which Steve Bucknor later acknowledged) that cost India the game and the series (Australia won 1-2).
