Air India Crash that happened in the late hours of Friday 7th August has confirmed that there were 190 passengers onboard, including six crew members, when a Boeing 737-800 crashed while landing in Kozhikode.
As at the time of filing this report, no fewer than 16 people have been confirmed dead. As rescue efforts continue and are in full gear, most people on board the Boeing 737 jet have been evacuated, with dozens of them taken to nearby hospitals with injuries, some serious, others not so much.
“We have at least 89 people, many of them with serious injuries, admitted at different Kozhikode hospitals. The ambulances are still coming in,” a senior police official, Sujith Das, told AFP news agency.
Air India Express also confirms the identity of the aircraft as VT-GHK, and states that it was operating the IX1344 service from Dubai.
“We regret that there has been an incident regarding our aircraft,” it says, adding that the jet “overshot” the runway
Images circulating on social media indicate that the Boeing 737 was extensively damaged withto the point of breaking into two. One could see its cockpit separating, as it came to rest on rough ground.
NOTAM information from Kozhikode states that runway 10/28 is unavailable “due aircraft accident”.
The airline says the aircraft landed at 19:41 on 7 August, which means the arrival took place in darkness, about 50min after sunset. The type of approach conducted has yet to be clarified.
Meteorological data from Kozhikode airport indicates it had been experiencing thunderstorms shortly before the accident, and that reduced visibility and rain showers prevailed at the time of the landing.
Cirium fleets data also shows that the aircraft is actually less than two years old, having been delivered to the carrier, just in September 2018.
