Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, indications have emerged that two prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the Southwest, former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde are being considered to lead the campaign council of the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

This is coming barely 24 hours after reports claimed the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) would announce Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong to lead the campaigns for Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the party.

According to the Punch, Oyinlola and Makinde are being considered to lead Atiku’s campaigns because the APC presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu is from the Southwest and the zone is considered to be his strongest base.

Explaining further, a Chieftain of the party who revealed this to the Punch said it is always good to pick a campaign manager from the region that your major opponent is from when running a presidential campaign.

He said, “When Buhari was running against Jonathan in 2015, he picked Amaechi as his campaign DG. Amaechi was from the Niger Delta just like Jonathan. Similarly, Jonathan picked Ahmadu Ali, who is from the North, as his campaign DG.”

However, he said Oyinlola is more likely to be named to lead the campaigns because Makinde will be busy seeking re-election. He adds that Oyinlola’s was a former military Governor of Lagos who understands Lagos politics.
